Day 4--The Fishing Trip

Leaving Puerta Adventuras, a little fishing village now overrun with gringo condos.

Our crew Alberto and Freddy, the least friendly natives we encountered...

Out in the open water, a bumpy bumpy ride.

After trolling for a couple of hours, the crew took us North to Punta Venado, a beautiful deserted beach that had excellent snorkeling in front of it. Right out of the boat we saw 2 squid and tons of fish. The little sergeant majors followed us around the whole time we were there, and one took a nip at my leg when I was still for a minute. There were also trumpetfish (long skinny suckers), a big filefish, tons of parrotfish, and a huge school of blue tangs that we swam along side for a while. Hopefully we got some good shots of them with the underwater camera!

Jeff in front of the beach at Punta Venado. You'll notice he's shaved off his beard for better suction with his mask. I think Necia could've skipped the whole mask & fin thing altogether and been quite happy...
We fished awhile longer to no avail, then snorkeled again for about an hour. Heading back to Puerto Adventuras, we talked the grumbling crew (Your Tip So Far...) into letting us troll some more. Necia & I settled in for another nap when Alberto suddenly jumped down from the top of the boat. We had something on the line!!

Jeff reeling in the HUGE Dorado--it kept jumping out of the water but I couldn't get a picture of it. =( Right away we got another fish on the second line, so they got Andy set up to bring it in. Freddy cast out a line and immediately we had ANOTHER fish to reel in!

The boys bringing in the second and third fish. Looked like hard work!

Andy's fish getting closer to the boat. You can see Alberto getting the hook of death ready. The fish were so pretty while in the water, shimmering in the sun...but not so much so up close:

Back in Puerta Adventuras. Jeff is actually holding Andy's fish, and Andy is holding one of Jeff's. We figured out that Andy's was a male (see the mean looking bull nose?) and Jeff's were both female. The crew estimated them to be around 45 to 50 lbs each.

Dead fish on the dock.

Alberto filleting one of the fish so we can take it to Gringo Dave's restaurant and have it cooked.

Waiting for our dinner at Gringo Dave's. Dave is an expatriate from Texas, and when we told him we were also Texans, he gave us girls an enormous margarita and Jeff a hatband on the house. The mahi mahi turned out to be the best meal of the trip--we had half cooked in garlic butter and half in a pineapple sauce--yummy! But even with Andy there, we couldn't finish it all!

Huge fish... garlic butter... pineapple... 52 oz beer...
Why did Cassie and I decide not to go on this trip again?
My jealousy meter is doing some pinging of its own now...
Great Pics!!

Don't worry, Jorin! There will be another trip and we will force all of you guys to go with us! Start saving your money now. Get an envelope and start putting $50 or $100 in it every month! Isn't this what Brian would advise?
